University of Cumbria student Craig Ring was the star of the night, playing his soft range of acoustic music in front of a packed bar.

With a voice not unlike that of Damien Rice, Ring impressed the crowd playing a mixture of his own music and cover versions but he was not the only one to perform on the night.

Ring followed Leighton onto the stage after the events manager set the wheels in motion, playing covers of Foo Fighters and Alice in Chains.

Rachael Walsh came on after Ring, covering Taylor Swift’s “Breathe” and displayed excellent singing qualities along with melodic guitar playing.

The duo of Sarah Sutton and Amanda Jefferies were on stage next and performed their first song, which had only been written on the day but despite a nervous opening they went on to relax and put on a good performance including a cover of Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me”.

Leighton now thinks the open mic night could become a regular fixture after success with the same thing at other campuses of the University of Cumbria.

“I come from a musical background and it is always good. We have done it at Penrith and Newton Rigg and now we are going to try it here,” he said.

“It works really well here and it is not too big. We have got a gig coming up at the Brickyard so things are looking good,” he added.
