UCU continued their love affair with the Royal Television Society as three teams of third-year film students picked up awards from the organisation.
The winners were:
- Inc, by Richard Leshone, Stephanie Whitehead, Gavin Power, Alex Wright and Max Heisler, for Best Fiction
- Impression, by Judith Kinsella, Don Morrison, Cameron Chalmers, Lucas Albro and Austin Blaylock, for Best Documentary (watch online)
- Learn a Language, by Michael Morgan Bain, Abigail Allsop, John Pierre Casanova, Carla Jagger and David Hunter, for Best Entertainment
The fourth student award, for animation, went to Teesside university with Old Habits Die Hard.
The judges praised Inc for being “intriguingly surreal” – but its director and writer Richard Leshone explained to us that this was far from the intention.
“I had a lot of dialogue written that when it came to the edit we had to cut…we had eight minutes but the piece was supposed to be four. So thanks [judges], but that wasn’t the intention!”
The judges praised Impression for its “sensitivity” and Learn a Language for being “striking and clever”. They also nominated two more of the university’s productions: The Waiting Game and Evelyn – A Love Story.
“As with the Film & Television course, the Multimedia course has consistently won awards and commendations for many years,” said head media lecturer Rob Charters.
“I’m extremely please for the students, who put a great deal of effort into the production of their pieces. It shows that the work produced by UCU students can win against work from institutions that consider themselves to be in the top three or four for film and television production.”
