The 21st of November saw Carlisle hold its first ‘Bite’ arts festival which showcased work from local artists and students from the University of Cumbria.
The festival was designed to boost culture in Carlisle as part of the Carlisle Renaissance project, as well as an addition to its bid for City of Culture UK. Exhibitions and installments were set out across the city’s historic quarter, with events in the Market Square, The Assembly Room, Foxes Café, Tullie House, Tithe Barn and Methodist chapel.
Unfortunately a combination of bad weather and lack of publicity meant that many of the events, especially those that required public interaction didn’t take place. The evenings ‘Bagatelle’ show at Tullie House had to be cancelled due to a power cut although all other indoor exhibitions stayed open.
Many of the indoor workshops were successful. including knitting classes and a music ensemble.
Justyna Scowronek, a photography student at the University of Cumbria, had an exhibition of her work displayed as part of the festival. Here she talks about her work and how important events like this are to artists;
